20th Anniversary of the Great Heck Rail Crash

There will be two Memorial Events for the 20th Anniversary of the Great Heck Rail Crash on Sunday 28th February 2021.

The 20th anniversary of the Great Heck Rail Crash will be remembered with commemorative events taking place at Newcastle upon Tyne Central Railway Station, the Great Heck Memorial Garden, and in Selby Abbey.

National coronavirus regulations and lockdown restrictions in England severely limit what is legally permissible, so these acts of remembrance will be live-streamed.

UPDATE:

Tony Thompson advises that the Great Heck 20th anniversary memorial service on Sunday went well.

The Chester and Holyhead Railway and The Britannia Bridge

The Britannia Bridge taken from the Menai Bridge – Photo Bill Rogerson

This month we complete the postings of Bill Rogerson’s (3 part) article on The Chester and Holyhead Railway and The Britannia Bridge, charting the history of the railway and bridge that connects Anglesey to the mainland and the BTP’s involvement.

One of many that can be found in the Research section of the Historybank pages.

The Great Storm, 1987

The Great Storm

In the week when we had very severe weather in the British Isles, by some bizarre co-incidence it was also the 30th anniversary of another climactic weather event in southern England.
Rob Ekins, a PC at BTP Brighton at the time, remembered the part he and his colleagues played that night in an article for History Lines: The GREAT STORM, 1987

One of many articles we hold in the HistoryBank section of our website.

UPDATE – November 2017: To commemorate the 30th anniversary Rob was interviewed by the Eastbourne Herald newspaper:

HistoryBank

You may have noticed a bit of rebranding on the site.

We’ve renamed Storybank as Historybank. It’s just a bit more descriptive, as it doesn’t just contain ‘stories’, but factual topics such as court reports and research articles.

The contents are as before, but with a better name!

HistoryBank can be found in the PAGES menu, to the right of the screen.

StoryBank Launched: the true story of the RDC Police

BTPHG has launched a web page called StoryBank where many articles from our rich history can be found. These include extracts from History Lines our regular Group newsletter and some fascinating Trial Reports from the Old Bailey. Also, we have introduced StoryBank itself, a section where you will find articles submitted by members covering a wide range of topics.

Please think about about sending one in yourself. They can be serious, case histories, amusing incidents, charitable or biographical. They need to true of course and connected to our ‘job’ in some way. And they can’t be too ‘political’ or slanderous. In this way we hope to build up a rich store of articles that tell the real history of the RDC Police (Railway, Dock and Canal.) And they don’t have to be the finished article – just send in a few notes if you want and we’ll do the rest.

What better way can there be to portray our history? Please send your story to StoryBank@btphg.org.uk
