Robert Samuel Cowles

by Steve Beamon

These four photographs have been donated by Robert’s grandson, John Pegg. I think the single image will be from around late Victorian early Edwardian period as he is shown on the 1911 census as a railway policeman living in Dovercourt, so I expect that he was based at Harwich. Note that the uniform in the photo with the soldier is different from the other uniform photo, five buttons as opposed to eight, as is the helmet. So it could be from around 1914. He is shown as a police sergeant in the LNER police on the 1939 registration, living in Walthamstow. He was probably based at Stratford or Liverpool Street. Prior to his police service, on the 1901 census, he was shown as an Agricultural Labourer.

He was born March 1880 and died January 1944.
