Status & Duties of the early railway policeman

The Project

To establish the status and duties of railway and dock policemen from the inception of the railways around 1825 and for the following forty year period, researching published sources including Acts of Parliament.

Railway policing began as early as 1826 but it was the 1830s before it became a recognisable service continuing into the 1840s and 1850s as the railway network expanded across the country. Towards the latter part of the period railway policing was becoming well established and is relevant to understanding earlier policing.
